Dealing with Dictators: Reflections on Diplomacy and Peacebuilding

Professor Matthew Neuhaus has been an Honorary Professor of International Law at ANU College of Law since November 2022. He served as Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands (2018-2022) and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague. Previously, he was Ambassador to Zimbabwe (2011-2015) and High Commissioner to Nigeria (1997-2000), with accreditation to several other African nations. He has held senior roles in DFAT and PMC, focusing on international law, UN, Multilateral engagement, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific.

Professor Neuhaus has also worked at the Commonwealth Secretariat (2002-2008) and held postings in Kenya, Papua New Guinea, and UN New York. He holds degrees from the University of Sydney and the University of Cambridge and attended Harvard’s Leaders in Development Program in 2006.
